Bathroom Renovations explained

What it is

A bathroom renovation is the complete replacement or remodel of your bathroom, shower room or en-suite. That usually means stripping out the old suite, tiles and flooring, altering pipework and wiring where needed, repairing or re-boarding walls, then fitting the new suite, tiling, flooring, lighting and decoration. At VTR Developments we manage all of those stages under one project, using trade contractors who each have between 10 and 30 years of experience in their own trade.

Who it’s for

Our bathroom work suits homeowners who want a new bathroom without managing the job themselves. That includes families replacing a tired, dated suite, landlords preparing a property for new tenants, people converting a bath into a walk-in shower, and anyone adding an en-suite as part of a wider renovation. If you would rather deal with one person from start to finish than coordinate a plumber, an electrician, a plasterer and a tiler separately, this is how we work.

When you need it

Most people call us when the bathroom has reached the end of its life: grout is cracked and stained, sealant keeps going mouldy, the shower leaks, the enamel is worn or the layout simply doesn’t work any more. Others call when they’re buying or selling, because a modern bathroom has a real effect on how a home feels and how quickly it sells. If you notice soft flooring, damp patches on the ceiling below, or tiles that sound hollow, that’s a sign water is already getting where it shouldn’t.

Why professional help matters

A bathroom is the most technically demanding small room in the house. Water, electricity and ventilation all meet in a few square metres, and mistakes are hidden behind tiles until they cause damage. Waterproofing, fall on shower trays, correct pipe sizing and safe electrical zoning all need to be right first time. Our gas contractors are Gas Safe registered and our electrical contractors are NICEIC or NAPIT registered, so the parts of the job that carry real risk are handled by properly registered tradespeople.

The cost of waiting

What happens if it’s left

A small leak behind a bath panel or under a shower tray rarely stays small. Water soaks into floorboards and joists, then shows up as a stain on the ceiling below. By the time it’s visible, the subfloor may need replacing, plaster below may need repairing and mould may have spread into the walls. Leaving a failing bathroom also means living with poor ventilation, which leads to condensation, black mould and a room that never feels clean however often it’s scrubbed.

The longer water damage goes on, the more trades are needed to fix it. What could have been a straightforward refit becomes joist repairs, ceiling replastering in another room and redecoration. Poorly installed electrics in a wet room are a safety risk, not just an inconvenience. And a bathroom finished cheaply can need putting right sooner than expected.

Common mistakes we put right

  • Tiling straight over old tiles or damp plasterboard instead of preparing the walls properly.
  • Choosing a shower tray or wet-room floor without checking the drainage fall underneath.
  • Hiring separate trades who don’t talk to each other, so the tiler arrives before the plumber has finished.
  • Using non-registered electricians for lighting, extractor fans or electric showers.
  • Skipping extraction or using an undersized fan, then fighting mould for years.
  • Buying the suite first and only then discovering it doesn’t fit the pipework or space.

In detail

Types of bathroom renovations we carry out

Full refits, shower rooms and en-suites

We handle complete family bathroom refits, compact shower rooms, cloakroom toilets and new en-suites created as part of a loft conversion or wider remodel. A full refit usually means everything comes out back to bare walls and floor. A shower room conversion often involves removing the bath, moving the waste and creating a larger, level-access shower area. An en-suite can mean new waste runs and a new electrical circuit, which is where coordinated trades make the biggest difference.

Walls, floors and waterproofing

Good tiling depends on what’s underneath. Depending on the room we may re-board with moisture-resistant board, skim walls to a flat finish, or apply a tanking system around showers and wet areas. Floors are checked for movement and over-boarded where needed so tiles don’t crack. Our plastering and flooring trades are part of the same team, so this preparation is done properly rather than skipped.

Showers, baths and suites

Whether you want a freestanding bath, a walk-in shower with a glass screen, a wall-hung toilet or a vanity unit with storage, we fit the suite you choose and make sure the pipework, supports and waste runs suit it. Wall-hung fittings need the right frames built into the wall before tiling. Electric showers need a correctly rated circuit installed by a registered electrician.

Lighting, heating and ventilation

A bathroom that looks good but steams up every morning isn’t finished. We consider extraction, heated towel rails, downlights and mirror lighting at the planning stage, so cables and ducting are run before the walls are closed up. Any electrical work in bathroom zones is carried out by our NICEIC or NAPIT registered electricians.

Homeowners and landlords

For homeowners, the focus is usually on comfort, layout and finish. For landlords and rental properties, durability, ease of cleaning and speed of turnaround between tenants matter most. We talk through those priorities at the site visit so materials and fittings suit how the bathroom will actually be used.

How much does a bathroom renovation cost in Nottingham?+

Every job is different, so we don’t publish fixed prices. We visit your property free of charge, measure up, talk through what you want and then give you a written quotation. You know the full scope before any work starts.

How long does a bathroom renovation take?+

It depends on the size of the room and how much is changing. Moving pipework, re-boarding walls or building a new en-suite all add time. We’ll give you a realistic timescale with your quotation, and because every trade is in one team, there are fewer gaps waiting for the next firm to turn up.

Do you handle the plumbing and electrics as well?+

Is there a guarantee on bathroom work?+

Yes. Renovation projects come with a 3-month workmanship guarantee.

Can you turn my bath into a walk-in shower?+

Yes. This is one of the most common jobs we do. We check the drainage fall and waste position at the site visit so the shower drains properly.

Do I need to supply the bathroom suite?+

You can choose and supply your own suite, or talk to us about what you want. Either way we’ll check sizes and connections before fitting starts.

How long will a new bathroom last?+

With proper wall preparation, waterproofing and ventilation, a well-fitted bathroom should last many years. Most early failures come from shortcuts underneath the tiles, which is exactly what we don’t skip.

Do you cover bathroom fitting in Derby and Mansfield?+

Do you offer emergency bathroom repairs?+

We are not a 24-hour emergency call-out service. Ring us during opening hours and we’ll tell you honestly how quickly we can get to you and what can be done in the meantime.
