Service overview

Painting & Decorating explained

What it is

Our painting and decorating service covers internal and external decorating finishes. Inside, that means walls, ceilings, woodwork, doors and skirting. Outside, it can include walls, render, fascias and woodwork. Every job starts with preparation: filling, sanding, priming and protecting surfaces.

Who it’s for

Decorating suits homeowners refreshing a room or whole house, people finishing after a renovation, landlords preparing a property between tenants and sellers getting a home ready for market.

When you need it

Common reasons are tired or marked walls, flaking woodwork, newly plastered rooms, a change of colour scheme or preparing a property for sale or rent. Outside, peeling paint and weathered woodwork are signs it’s time.

Why professional help matters

The finish is only as good as the preparation. Skipping filling, sanding or priming leads to visible patches, peeling and uneven sheen. Our contractors each have between 10 and 30 years of experience in their trade.

The cost of waiting

What happens if it’s left

Flaking external paint exposes timber and render to the weather. Bare wood takes on water and starts to rot; windowsills and fascias are often first to go.

Leaving exterior decoration too long can turn a repaint into joinery repairs. Inside, painting over poor surfaces wastes paint and time and still looks patchy.

Common mistakes we put right

  • Painting over flaking or glossy surfaces without preparation.
  • Skipping a mist coat on new plaster.
  • Using the wrong paint for kitchens, bathrooms or exterior surfaces.
  • Not protecting floors and furniture.
  • Painting exteriors in damp or cold weather.

Planning guide

What to know before you start

Preparation is most of the job

On a typical decorating job, more time goes into preparation than into painting. Cracks and holes are filled and sanded, old flaking paint is scraped back, glossy surfaces are keyed so new paint can grip, and stains are sealed so they don’t bleed through. Woodwork is sanded and primed where bare. Floors, furniture and fittings are protected. This work is what makes the final coats look crisp and stay sound.

Choosing paints for each surface

Walls, ceilings, woodwork, metal and exterior surfaces each need the right type of paint. Kitchens and bathrooms benefit from paints designed for moisture and frequent cleaning. Hallways and stairs need durable, wipeable finishes. External woodwork and render need coatings that can handle the weather. Using the wrong product is one of the main reasons decorating looks tired quickly.

Exterior decorating and timing

Outside work depends on the weather. Paint needs dry surfaces and suitable temperatures to bond and cure properly. Painting on damp timber or in cold conditions can lead to blistering and early failure. We plan external decorating around the forecast. Where render or woodwork needs repairs first, our other trades can handle that as part of the same project.

Decorating after a renovation

Decorating is usually the final trade before the clean, and it’s where a renovation starts to feel finished. Newly plastered walls need a mist coat before finishing coats. Fresh joinery needs priming. Because plastering and decorating are both part of our team, the handover between them is planned rather than left to chance.

Getting a property ready to let or sell

A fresh, neutral finish is one of the simplest ways to make a property more appealing to tenants and buyers. For landlords, durable paints in high-traffic areas reduce wear between tenancies. For sellers, well-prepared walls and woodwork make rooms look cleaner and better cared for in photos and viewings.

Keeping paintwork looking good

Interior paintwork lasts longer if scuffs are cleaned gently and touch-ups are done with the same paint. Outside, keep an eye on sills and the bottom of doors, where water sits longest. Catching small areas of flaking early stops water getting into the timber underneath.

Interior colour and finish choices

Colour and sheen both affect how a room feels and how well the paintwork wears. Matt finishes hide imperfections in walls but can mark more easily; tougher finishes are easier to wipe clean but show every bump in the plaster beneath. Lighter colours make small rooms feel larger, while darker colours need more coats for even coverage. Talking this through before work starts means the finish suits both the look you want and how the room is used.

Woodwork, doors and skirting

Woodwork takes more knocks than walls and is where tired decorating shows first. Doors, frames, skirting and spindles need sanding, filling and the right primer and topcoat to give a hard, even finish. Getting clean lines where woodwork meets walls is what makes a room look professionally finished rather than just repainted.

Decorating in occupied homes

Most decorating is done while people are living in the house. Working room by room, protecting floors and furniture, and keeping the work area tidy at the end of each day keeps disruption down. We’ll talk through which rooms will be out of use and when at the site visit, so you can plan around it.

Exterior surfaces that need attention

Outside, the areas that fail first are usually the ones that hold water: window sills, the bottom rails of doors and gates, and fascia boards under leaking gutters. Bare or cracked timber should be prepared and protected before winter. Painted render needs a coating that lets the wall breathe so moisture isn’t trapped behind the paint. Regular checks each spring and autumn help you spot these areas before small problems turn into joinery or render repairs.
